Gorilla Tracking

Gorilla Tracking

Uganda is best known world wide as the most convenient base for mountain gorilla tracking. About 440 of these rare and endangered mountain gorilla are found in Uganda. The last population census found that there are a total of about 800 in the wild world wide!  The location of the Gorillas habitat is divided between Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the Virunga Volcano Region, both located in the south west regions of Uganda. These are approximately 600 km from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.

Gorilla tracking permits are strictly controlled by Ugandan Wildlife Authorities – UWA and only 8 permits a day are sold for each mountain gorilla family. Groups of 8 persons each set off early morning with a Park Ranger Guide, to locate 8 seperate habituated groups of gorillas in the dense mountain forest, and spend about 1 hour in close proximity to them.

Gorilla Permits are usually booked up to months in advance, however we are often able to buy small numbers at shorter notice. They currently cost $ 500.00 each, and money is not refundable if your tour is cancelled.

Above And Beyond Safaris organises individual gorilla tracking safaris, utilizing a luxury Safari Style tented camp at Bwindi Forest as our base. The shortest possible time for a gorilla safaris is 3 days, traveling from Kampala. However, we recommend that you take advantage of your visit to the region and spend a few extra nights relaxing and enjoying excellent game viewing. There are a variety of big game as well as birds and scenery with a visit to Lake Mburo National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park en route.

Your gorilla tracking safari can be rounded off by a visit to the Chimp Sanctuary at Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria, which is partly funded by the Jane Goodall Institue and the Born Free Foundation. Ngamba Island is a day trip out on lake Victoria involving a 1  1/2 hour crossing from Entebbe either by power boat or traditional canoe.

We are able to quote for fully inclusive itineraries. This includes airport meets, all transportation in our own carefully maintained 4×4 safari vehicles. English speaking Driver/Tour Guide, all accommodation, park entry fees, gorilla permits, Ngamba Island Visit. We also handle airport transfer at departure.
